Pesarapappu Pachadi Recipe | Moong Dal Chutney

Pesarapappu pachadi is a simple, comforting chutney made with moong dal and added spices. It is from Andhra Pradesh in South India. There are two variants of this pachadi.

Soaked Pesarapappu Pachadi

We can make either version as both are very simple and easy to make. one version is raw pachadi withou any soaking or frying just grind it with red chillis, salt, asafoetida and tamarind. The second version is made from moong dal (split green gram), which is soaked until soft and then ground into a coarse, tangy chutney.

Unlike many Indian dishes that need long cooking, this one uses raw, soaked dal, which keeps it light, protein-rich, and easy on the stomach. It has a lovely balance of flavors: a little heat from chilies, a touch of sourness from tamarind or raw mango or a spoon of lemon juice.

Adding additonal flavours like raw mango or fresh coconut gives a different taste. A hot tempering of mustard seeds, curry leaves, and dried red chilies is poured on top just before serving, which gives the dish its signature aroma.

It’s a popular home-style recipe, often made quickly for lunch since it needs no elaborate cooking — just soaking, grinding, and a simple tempering(optioanl). Many families make it during warmer months because it’s cooling and light. It’s naturally vegan (if ghee is skipped), gluten-free, and a great way to include more legumes in your diet. Pesarapappu Pachadi is usually eaten as a side dish with plain steamed rice and a spoon of ghee, though it also pairs wonderfully with hot rotis or as a dip with rice crackers.

Pesarappu is popularly known as Moong dal or green gram. I learned this pachadi variety only after my wedding. My husband and in-laws like this pachadi very much. We must serve rasam along with the pachadi. It is best accompanied with hot piping rice and rasam during winter nights.
