We can have it in all seasons apart from summer, but during summer we need more energy so have it in summers. During summers we can consume it with thin buttermilk, salt and lemon juice. Whereas in other seasons we can enjoy it like soup with loads of vegetables or we can mudde pair it with pachi pulusu or pappu.
About the Ragi Flour:
Ragi flour can be made at home or get the readily available from the stores. Making ragi flour at home is a big task and we need to have lot of patience.
As we need to clean them thoroughly. Wash and dry them for at least a day or two. Then get the flour done in the flour mill or do it using domestic mill at home (if you have one).
If making the flour at home, we can include other ingredients like fried cashews, almonds, barley like that. Of course that is again our choice.
But, the easy way make java is get the readily available flour from the stores and prepare it. Coming to the point of consumption, it is your choice to take it either as breakfast, or we can have it as mid meal. Again it depends on your choice of preference.
I prefer both ways. The most important point to remember is too cook the porridge for at 15 to 20 minutes. Otherwise digestion would become difficult and creates another health issues like bloating and burps.
Some people make sweet porridge and some salted one. Sweet is made with jaggery. It is good for infants and kids. It will be helpful in strengthening bones strength.
Sweet ragi java is good for infants and kids, salted one is good for others. As it takes longer time to digest it is better to give little portion to infants. We need to check whether they are able to digest it or not, then only give it in regular intervals.
