Badam milk, also known as Badam Doodh, is a traditional Indian beverage celebrated for its rich, nutty flavor and aromatic profile. This drink is made by simmering full-fat milk with a smooth paste of almonds, often enhanced with spices like saffron and cardamom.

Almonds or Badam, A Powerhouse of Nutrition:

Beyond its indulgent taste, it is highly regarded for its health benefits. It is naturally rich in protein, calcium, and vitamin E, making it an excellent choice for growing children, elderly individuals, and athletes.

The presence of healthy monounsaturated fats can help manage cholesterol levels, while the calcium in the milk strengthens bones.

Badam Milk Process:

The traditional process of making badam milk is laborious but ensures a silky-smooth texture:

  • Soaking and Peeling: Soak them for 6 to 8 hours in hot water. This would loosen the skin and peeling of it will be easy.
  • Grinding the Paste: The peeled almonds are blended into a fine, smooth paste with a small amount of milk.
  • Infusing Aromatics: Saffron strands add a luxurious golden hue and floral notes, while cardamom powder provides a warm, sweet scent.
  • Simmering: The almond paste is whisked into boiling milk and simmered gently to thicken and blend the flavors.

Badam milk is frequently served during festive occasions such as Holi and Ramadan, but it is also a common welcoming drink for guests.

While sugar is the standard sweetener, health-conscious alternatives like honey, rock sugar (mishri), or dates can also be used.

Preparing badam milk is simple yet rewarding. Start with 10-15 almonds, soaked in water for 6-8 hours to soften and remove the skin easily.

Blend them with a cup of warm milk, a pinch of saffron for aroma, cardamom pods for spice, and a touch of sugar or honey. Strain for smoothness, then heat gently without boiling to preserve nutrients.

Variations abound: Add rose water for a floral twist, pistachios for extra crunch, or turmeric for an anti-inflammatory boost. In summer, serve chilled with ice cubes; in winter, warm it with a dash of ghee.

Beyond taste, badam milk embodies balance—cooling yet warming, sweet yet wholesome. It’s more than a drink; it’s a tradition fostering family bonds over steaming glasses.

Whether for Ramadan iftar, post-yoga recovery, or a cozy evening, badam milk invites you to savor simplicity and strength in every sip.
