Jal jeera means Cumin water, in Hindi. ‘Jal’ means water in hindi and ‘Jeera’ is cumin, so simply it is cumin water.

Summer is heating up slowly. Thirst is increasing and we have to keep ourselves hydrated. Plain water is not enough to avoid de-hydration. So we need something special which helps in keeping our body hydrated and also healthy. Jal jeera is one such drink. It is healthy and refreshing drink. Jal jeera drink is a medicinal drink which helps with digestion problems, and also improves appetite.
Jal Jeera is a welcome drink to be served before meal, usually in weddings or any functions in summers. We get jaljeera powder also in stores but the best jaljeera drink can be made at home in a simple way. We can mix it with chilled water or soda. Serve immediately. I normally prepare and keep it in the refrigerator. Mix whenever feel like and enjoy it.
When we have guests at home instead of serving tea or coffee I would prefer to offer them Jal jeera, pudina pani sweet lassi or salt lassi, depending on the choice of the guests.
About Jal Jeera
The main spices present in jal jeera are roasted cumin, ginger, black pepper, mint, black salt, mint, dry mango. Apart from these powders fresh coriander leaves and boondi are added to get more flavour.
The cumin, which is the main ingredient in it have a medicinal value which aids digestion. The mint has a cooling effect. Black salt or rock salt acts as a digestive. Overall jal jeera is a best cooling agent and also good for digestion during summer.

Jal Jeera | Jal Jeera Recipe
Ingredients
- 1/2 Ltr Chilled Water
- 1/2 Cup Coriander Leaves
- 1/4 Cup Mint Leaves
- 1/2 Tsp Roasted Cumin Powder check instructions
- 1/2 Tsp Black Salt
- 1/2 Tsp Dry Mango Powder
- Salt to Taste
- 3 inches Long Ginger
- 1 Tsp Asafoetida
- 4 Lemons
- 1/2 Tsp Sugar
- 4 Ice Cubes
- 1 Tbsp Plain Boondi optional
Instructions
- Discard coriander leaves and mint leaves from their stems.
- Wash them thoroughly.
- Roast cumin seeds in a dry pan, till they turn aromatic.
- Cool them and blend to make a fine powder.
- In a blender jar add all the ingredients except lemon juice and water.
- Blend them to make a fine paste.
- Sieve jal jeera paste to get fine extract.
- We can store the jal jeera paste for further use also.
- In a serving jar, add jal jeera paste, water and mix them well.
- Check salt and cumin seed powder.
- If found less add them and mix them well again.
- Pour the jal jeera into serving tumblers.
- Add ice cubes as per chillness.
- Sprinkle some plain boondi to get a nice crunchy flavour.
- Serve jal jeera chilled during the hot summer day.
